Volunteers at Lobby Shop

Volunteers come from all walks of life bringing a variety of skills to help improve the lives of others. With their own personal touch, our volunteers deliver quality care with compassion. Whether you volunteer at Hunterdon Medical Center or at one of its many satellites, you are an integral part of our healthcare system and an ambassador to the community. Volunteers affect the quality care of our patients and their families.

Volunteer Joan Gaughran

What town do you reside in? Raritan Township.

How long have you been volunteering? 2 years.

Where do you volunteer at Hunterdon Health? In the Gift Shop on Wednesdays and Fridays.
What made you become a volunteer for Hunterdon Health?  After my husband passed away, I felt I wanted to do something to keep myself busy and help others in the community.

What is the best thing about volunteering? The best thing is interacting with the people who come into the Gift Shop. Whether it be employees, patients, or visitors, you never know what they are going through, so if a friendly smile and conversation makes them feel better, it makes us happy.

When you are not volunteering, what do you enjoy doing? I love doing activities with my family, gardening, walking and biking.

What town do you reside in? Flemington.

How long have you been volunteering? 6 years.

Where do you volunteer at Hunterdon Health? Doctor’s Office Building on Wednesdays.

What made you become a volunteer for Hunterdon Health?  I wanted to contribute to the community.

What is the best thing about volunteering? Helping people.

When you are not volunteering, what do you enjoy doing? Walking and listening to music.

Where do you volunteer at Hunterdon Health? I am a part of the Pet Therapy program with my two certified dogs, Oliver & Reily.

What made you become a volunteer for Hunterdon Health?  The Pet Therapy program.

What is the best thing about volunteering?  The best thing about the Volunteer program is that it makes people feel better.

When you are not volunteering, what do you enjoy doing? When not volunteering, I enjoy gardening, quilting, and reading books.

Where do you volunteer at Hunterdon Health? I am a wayfinder on the 2nd floor at HMC.

What made you become a volunteer for Hunterdon Health?  I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. I am a retired high school teacher (NJ & NY – 30 years) and service, compassion and patience are a part of my life.

What is the best thing about volunteering? Meeting new people and offering my assistance and help and sometimes just a kind word. Hospitals, at times, can be stressful places.

When you are not volunteering, what do you enjoy doing? Reading, walking, and birding.  I participate in the activities at St. Magdalen’s Church and I enjoy the love of my family, two children and two grandchildren.

What is the best thing about volunteering? The interactions and engagement with people.

When you are not volunteering, what do you enjoy doing? Reading, visiting with friends, swimming, and traveling.

What made you become a volunteer for Hunterdon Health?  When I retired and thought of volunteering, HMC was my first choice and 17 years later it still is!

What is the best thing about volunteering? Meeting and working with so
many dedicated, hard-working people and taking satisfaction from helping others and making great friends.

When you are not volunteering, what do you enjoy doing? Spending time with friends and family.

When you are not volunteering, what do you enjoy doing? I enjoy volleyball, walking, reading, sewing, and spending time with family.
