Directors Welcome
The Hunterdon Medical Community's dedication to family medicine is a story centered around its people. In the mid-1900s, Hunterdon was the only New Jersey county without a hospital. Driven by a community initiative that included fundraisers, rallies, and donations, the goal was not just to build a hospital, but a medical center that would provide care and serve as a resource for medical education and physician training.
Opened in 1953, education was immediately integral to the hospital's mission. Initially offering a general medical year of training, Hunterdon remained at the forefront of medical education. In 1969, when Family Medicine was chartered as a new specialty, Hunterdon was among the first medical centers in the country to offer a comprehensive residency program. This commitment to family medicine remains strong and continues to evolve. The residency now operates two family health centers collectively seeing 48,000 patient visits annually.
The Hunterdon family medicine residency thrives on the dedication of its faculty and staff. Many faculty members are alumni, enthusiastically perpetuating the Hunterdon family medicine tradition and demonstrating a strong passion for education. The unopposed nature of the residency provides residents with direct access to a diverse array of medical and surgical specialists, all committed to one-on-one teaching. A significant testament to the Hunterdon Medical Community's positive impact is that over 40% of Hunterdon Family Medicine Residency graduates choose to practice in the surrounding areas, often expressing a deep connection to the community.
Hunterdon provides an ideal environment for individuals seeking a family medicine residency that blends strong tradition with innovation and a dedication to excellence. We encourage you to discover more about us and contribute to our enduring legacy of distinction in family medicine education.
