October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, but Hunterdon Breast Surgery Center celebrates survivors every day.
Kathryn Menscher recently received a new title at her last appointment: cancer survivor. She has officially graduated after being followed for five years by Jennifer Montes, MD, MPH, Breast Surgeon. Dr. Montes explained that all patients are followed for five years after treatment. At their five-year appointment, each patient is celebrated with staff cheering, party horns blowing, a graduation pink tassel, and a goodie bag. Patients who agree also have their photos taken for the graduation board.
This special celebration truly highlights what makes the Hunterdon Breast Surgery Center so unique. Hunterdon Breast Surgery Center reminds women to schedule their yearly mammogram. Getting a mammogram is an important step women can take to protect their health. The best protection is early detection. Help spread the word. Encourage your mother, sisters, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, co-workers, neighbors, and friends to schedule their mammogram.
Breast Screening Guidelines for Women:
• Clinical breast examinations every 1-3 years from age 25-39, then annually from age 40 on.
• Begin annual screening mammography at age 40 years.
• Monthly self-breast exams starting at age 18 years old, a week after their period when hormones are lowest. Women should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and should report any changes to their health care provider.
