Hunterdon Health and MidJersey Orthopaedics is pleased to announce the addition of new enabling technologies for knee, hip, and shoulder replacement at Hunterdon Medical Center.
For knee replacements, Dr. Robert More and Dr. Daniel Torino now use robot assistance during these procedures. Dr. More uses the Johnson & Johnson VELYS robot and Dr. Torino uses the Stryker Mako robot. Both robots use the patient’s exact anatomy to help produce precise bone cuts and ligament balancing, offering the potential for improved patient outcomes and enhanced recovery. Robotic assisted replacement is particularly useful for those patients who only require an unicompartmental (partial) replacement versus a total replacement.
For hip replacements, Dr. Torino uses the Stryker Mako robot for “navigation” purposes, allowing more precise placement of the acetabular component in the patient’s pelvis, critical for stability of the hip in the long term.
For shoulder replacement, Dr. Michael Pollack uses the Medacta extAR shoulder system. This uses a CT scan to perform pre-operative 3D planning, which combined with intra-operative data and augmented reality, allows Dr. Pollack to precisely position the glenoid component for optimal range of motion and durability of the replacement.

In addition, over the past year, Hunterdon Health and MidJersey Orthopaedics have collaborated together to significantly advance patient care protocols. We have successfully established an outpatient total joint replacement program, enabling same-day discharges for eligible patients. This initiative is complemented by our continued commitment to providing evidence-based multimodal pain control, incorporating spinal anesthetics and targeted hip and knee anesthetic blocks. Furthermore, we are actively developing an initiative to introduce alternative pain control methods, aiming for opioid-free enhanced recovery for all our patients.
